More on one of my favourite topics, the double entendre. In the past Ive expressed amazement at what Spike Milligan got away with in The Goon Show. (You all know about Hugh Jampton). Currently an even older comedy show, Its That Man Again, is running on Radio 4 Extra. Whats fascinating is that writer Ted Kavanaghs famous word play gets only modest response. Its the innuendo that gets the big guffaws. In an episode from 1941 Tommy Handley tells the bandleader, Last time I saw you, you were slightly pizzicato. (Huge laugh). A bit rude for the BBC in 1941, no?
