More research is starting to support an old theory for why people gain weight, especially given the obesity epidemic and the fact that dietary restrictions dont seem to work very well when based on caloric totals only. Heres the premise of a competing theory that has been around for almost 100 years, but not taken seriously until more recently: What if it’s not overeating that causes us to get fat, but the process of getting fatter that causes us to overeat? For any of you who like documentaries, Fat Head discussed this approach in more detail. And recently a number of new studies are being published in JAMA and Lancet that provide some support for the idea that it is the quality of calories that may be more important than the number of calories. The biggest culprits for weight gain are high glycemic foods like cereals, breads, and other similar carbohydrates. These types of foods were pushed more, and instead of, fats in our diet at about the same time that the waistlines of our population really started expanding. Im giving a lot more thought to the number of carbohydrates in my diet on a daily basis, and keeping high glycemic foods in moderation than I have ever in my past.
