More romance from last night: after dinner, DH and I decided to pick up a bottle of wine on the way home. We thought it’d only take a minute, but… He got the idea to get snacks while we were there and I wanted a cucumber. (Because I like to slice them up and then dip the slices in ranch dressing.) And he said that no way was he buying just a bottle of wine and a cucumber. So he runs off and grabs a frozen pizza and throws it in the cart to make it look less embarrassing, and at last we make it to the register. Well, we weren’t getting out of there with our wine and cucumber easily. The cashier demanded to see his ID, but after he gave it to her she wanted mine. I’d left it in the car so I stood there with the wine and cucumber and pizza (a line forming behind me) and waited while DH trekked across the parking lot in the cold to get my purse. While he was gone the cashier stopped me from picking up his ID to put away (since he’d left his wallet with me), demanding to ‘hold it until he returned’. As if I was a teenager who was going to somehow go on a drinking binge around town with an older man’s ID. So I stood there, the subject of her reproving looks, as I waited and waited. Anyway we eventually made it out of there with our items, and I guess the moral of this story is that if you live in the Bible Belt and you think you’re just going to breeze into a store and grab a bottle of wine and a cucumber in the middle of the night, prepare to meet some resistance.
