More summer weather trivia: Did you know that a temperature of 30 degrees will feel hotter in June than it would if we had a late season heatwave in September or early October? The reason for this is that the sun is higher in the sky in June and the rays are therefore much more direct and intense. Come September, the sun is lower in the sky and the rays take a longer path to reach us. This is also the reason why 30 degrees feels much more intense in places like Florida, the Caribbean or South Korea than it does in Toronto, Ottawa, the UK or the Netherlands: the closer you are to the equator, the more intense the sun is and the higher in the sky it is at noon. A place such as Busan, South Korea at latitude 35 degrees north, for example, will therefore feel more uncomfortable on a 30 degree day in May, June or July than cities like Toronto (44 degrees north), Ottawa (45 degrees north), Amsterdam (52 degrees north) or Newcastle, England (55 degrees north). Florida, which lies below the 30th parallel of latitude can be excruciating in June, July and August. As for humidity, keep in mind that any dewpoint (the measure of the amount of water in the air) over 12 degrees Celsius will begin to cause discomfort, with a dewpoint of 22 degrees Celsius being excruciating.
