More than 1,000 S. African pupils hospitalized for eating contaminated food CAPE TOWN, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- The number of pupils being hospitalized for eating contaminated food has risen to more than 1, 000, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. Several schools in Limpopo Province in Northern South Africa have reported cases of pupils sickened by tainted food in the past recent weeks, the provincial department of education said. The pupils began vomiting and complaining of abdominal pain after eating porridge and beans that were believed to contain glass, department officials said. The food was provided by companies that had supplied mainly no- fee schools in the province, according to the Star newspaper. The companies, which had contracts with the province, were not identified. Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha said the provincial government was concerned about the incident. He said the province was considering suspending all food nutrition tenders across the province while an investigation was going on. But that is still subject to confirmation .. This department is one of the departments under administration, so we cannot take the decision as the province; we still need to get concurrence from national government, he said. Enditem
