More than 170,000 portions of fruit and vegetables grown in Kent - TopicsExpress

More than 170,000 portions of fruit and vegetables grown in Kent have been saved from being needlessly thrown away or left to rot in the last two years. Thats the claim of Gleaning UK, an organisation that harvests unwanted or ugly food and redistributes it to charities. Its estimated that between 20% and 40% of fruit and vegetables grown in the UK are never harvested, because they dont meet cosmetic standards. In total, 15 million tonnes of food is wasted in the UK each year, costing around £14.2 billion.
