More than 2,200 computers were missing or unpacked and unused in nine city schools and a Department of Education administrative building, according to an audit released Tuesday by city Controller Scott Stringer. Stringer’s audit examined how the city maintained inventory controls over computer hardware purchased through two separate contracts worth more than $197 million combined. Stringer said the missing and unused computers at the 10 sites audited by his office could suggest a bigger problem with computer inventories in the city schools. “If auditors can’t locate an average of 200 computers per school, this may be just the tip of the iceberg,” Stringer said. Stringer’s office found that the city Education Department kept poor records of computer purchases, leading to lost items or computers sitting unused in closets at schools. At Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn, auditors found 74 unopened laptops and tablets in a closet. Similar findings were reported at other schools. Education Department officials said they would address the issue by asking agency offices and schools to update or create computer inventory lists by June 2015.
