More than 60 years after they left high school to serve our country, three Albuquerque war veterans now have their high school diplomas. Albuquerque Public Schools presented two World War II vets the diplomas Wednesday. Charles Herrera joined the marines. He would have graduated in 1942. Robert Gleason lied about his age so he could become a marine, too. He says he’s excited to finally get the diploma. “All of my life I encouraged all of my children to go and graduate, and how could I not be a graduate when I insisted that they were? So this is wonderful,” said Gleason. “It almost brings tears, but they are good tears.” He would have graduated in 1948. Edwardo Cano’s daughter, who served in Korea, accepted the diploma on his behalf. He was in the Army and would have graduated in 1952.
