More than four years after publicly promising to reduce the pesticides used on its potatoes, the McDonalds corporation has done little. Communities that live near large-scale potato production, like those in northern Minnesota, are still routinely exposed to health-harming pesticide drift. These rural communities are fed up — and theyre saying so directly to McDonalds shareholders on May 22. Will you sign the petition and join those speaking out for safer potato fields? Tell McDonalds to keep its word » Support the Toxic Taters coalition effort to pressure McDonalds into action. This Minnesota coalition of small farmers, White Earth tribal members and parents is urging the company to keep its word and reduce the amount of harmful pesticides used to grow potatoes for fries. For years, members of the Toxic Taters coalition have worked to protect their children, farms and environment from pesticides drifting from nearby potato fields. Data indicate that these chemicals are in their air, with 64% of air samples collected by community partners containing fungicides. The most frequently-detected chemical, chlorothalonil, is classified by EPA as highly toxic when inhaled and a probable carcinogen. As one of the largest buyers of potatoes in the world, McDonalds can change what happens in Minnesota and in potato fields across the country. Simply put, McDonalds has both the power and responsibility to demand their producers grow potatoes in safer ways. Stand with rural communities » Sign the petition and send a message to McDonalds to keep its promise. Urge the company to ensure its potatoes are grown in ways that dont put rural communities in harms way. Thanks for speaking up and spreading the word!
