More than half a million Filipinos are visually impaired due to the top three causes of eye problems in the Philippines: uncorrected cataract, and glaucoma, the Department of Health (DoH) revealed. In celebration of the sight saving month this August, the DoH encouraged Filipinos to undergo eye examinations to prevent avoidable blindness cases. In the country, some 569,072 are visually-impaired with 62.1 percent caused by cataracts, 10.3 percent to uncorrected refractive errors, 8 percent to glaucoma, and 4 percent to retinopathies (damage to the retina, the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the inner eye) according to statistics prepared by the DoH.
