More things to ponder coming into the 20th anniversary of South Canyon. I was in a local fire refresher this week, and we watched the Weather Channel clip on Yarnell, which featured Ted Putnam, among others. After the clip was over, I was curious, and asked how many people in the room knew who Mr. Putnam was... not a single hand went up, in a group of thirty firefighters ranging from first year folks to seasoned veterans. I have been fortunate enough to have heard him speak on Human Factors and mindfulness on several occasions, and I have a deep respect for his experience, his wisdom, and his willingness to go against the flow to do the right thing. This link is to an interview on leadership that was done by a friend of mine, but do a Google search for Ted Putnam to find more interesting reading. Its a tragedy in its own right that so few firefighters of my generation know who Ted is, and what hes done for our culture and our safety. Become a student of fire, of human factors, of leadership, and be mindful on the line this summer.
