More water politics in Congress today. An overreaching attempt to blame the drought on the Endangered Species Act, and to direct more water deliveries to the San Joaquin Valley -- with redirected impacts to the rest of the state and the environment. Once again, House Republicans questioned whether there is really even a drought -- falsely arguing that water shortages are because of environmental laws. During the debate, I noted that crises like this drought present us with a crucial choice: some choose to work together out of necessity and solve problems; others choose to be opportunists, to overreach, to scapegoat, and to throw others under the bus to advance their self-interest. We saw the good side of that continuum in California this year, with several thoughtful, bipartisan water bills that will make a positive difference. Unfortunately, were seeing the opposite approach in Congress. Powerful, litigious and relentless special interests in the San Joaquin Valley are using the drought as an opportunity to repackage and jam through the same old water grabs theyve pushed for years. Its under the bus for everyone else, especially the environment. Ill keep fighting these efforts in every way possible. fresnobee/2014/09/09/4114109/valley-communities-lobby-congress.html?sp=/99/406/263/
