More words of wisdom from my friend George: . Seniority and Influence The bevy of eight new Republican Senators are probably through with their “freshman orientation” by now, you know, the one that tells them where the restrooms are, how they are to behave as Senators and how they are expected to vote. Offices will be assigned, staff hired and while the thrill of victory slowly subsides, the agony of what comes next sets in. They will think to themselves, “I was sent here by conservative voters to effect the course of our errant government but now, I’m told I must be a loyal part of the Republican team to maintain big government policies or I’ll never get a committee appointment, and have no influence”, something like that! Like all really big organizations, the Senate has rules for advancement based upon seniority. Because of that long accepted standard of promotion, the volcanic election shift from moderate to conservative in the Senate, will be slowed to a crawl. Elected morons and near idiots will still set the agenda as committee chairs and things will change so slowly as to be almost unbearable. It was the seniority thing that gave us the despised Harry Reid in the Senate and that dolt, Nancy Pelosi in the House. It is also the mechanism that keeps freshmen senators in their place. The Atlanta news is already lamenting that Georgia has lost seventy-five years of its political experience in Congress with this last election. There will be no chairmanships, no influence and nothing for Georgia as a state for a few years more, they claim. Maybe so, but that is exactly why new people were sent to congress, to put people with new ideas in places where they can present their promises and try to make a difference, the most important difference being not to cooperate with democrats. It’s sad that old committee and sub-committee chairmen, in their positions of power due to seniority, will still hold to the big-government course the democrats set for us years ago until such time they either die, in situ, or are voted out of office. In two more years, if we pay close attention as tea party conservatives all across America, additional changes to the staid membership of failed socialist ideas can again be challenged. Naturally, I know the party in power appoints Committee’s and sub-committee Chairmen, seniority being the first consideration and loyalty the second. For Georgia, David Perdue has asked to be appointed to the Armed Services and the Agricultural committees. I hope he gets them, but I hope he is not sidelined because his victory came at the hands of the conservative base, the tea party, turning out in high numbers to support his candidacy, and who put him there. Mitch McConnell has often expressed his disdain for the conservative base. He must be the first removed because I am not at all sanguine that the leopard will ever change his spots. I hope that our Senator-elect, David Perdue, is very careful in selecting his staff. I suspect one will be selected for him on the basis they have experience in congress and can smooth the senators voyage through the rock and shoals of law making. That’s a trap of course. Those picked staffs will be big-government acolytes and will steer their senators progress the way the leadership wants it. Beware! Remember, freedom is the goal, the Constitution is the way. Now, pay attention and go get ‘em. (13 Nov 2014)
