Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton) Saturday, 15 July 1933 p6 THE REAL PIONEER An old pioneer in the person of the late Mrs. Emily Barrett, who passed away at her late residence, Gregory Downs Hotel, via Burketown, was a well known figure in the Gulf country. Coming from England as a young lady, she married the late Mr. W. Barrett in 1881. Carrying by horse waggons was the only way of conveying goods to the back country at that time. She, with her husband, brought the first loads of provisions to where the township of Camooweal now stands. Work at that time was plentiful and drivers were scarce, so Mrs. Barrett had to drive one of the teams herself. In 1886 they bought the old hotel at Gregory Downs and, building a new one, started a business that Mrs. Barrett carried on till the time of her death. Members of the original Buffalo Race Club will remember the cordial receptions given by Mrs. Barrett at those times. At the time of her death she was nearly 76. Her husband predeceased her 11 years ago, at the age of 77. They had no family. There will be many who will regret her passing. This photograph below of Emily Barrett was in my grandmother, Betsy Jane Shadforths album.
