Morning Reflection By Mr Yap This morning, I would like to share the story of a person who has shown perseverance in overcoming challenges in her life. This person is Christine Ha, a Vietnamese American who won the MasterChef Season 3 title in 2012. Christine Ha led a typical childhood life, and made it through to university to pursue an undergraduate degree. Things started to go wrong when she was in her early 20s, when she experienced moments of paralysis. Doctors eventually diagnosed her to be suffering from an autoimmune disease that attacks the optic nerves and spinal cord. She would eventually lose her sense of sight, and with it the ability to do most things we often take for granted, such as reading, driving, and moving about independently. Like any other person, Christine became depressed upon receiving this news. In an interview with a newspaper, Christine said that she tries hard to stay positive and upbeat. Everything happens for a reason, she said, and this disease gave her a chance to build up her character. What helped her also is a group of friends and family members who gave her support whenever they can. Christine, however, did what many people would have assumed impossible. She learnt how to cook. Without vision, Christine learnt to depend on her other senses - taste, smell and how certain ingredients feel. She learnt to organize her cooking process so that she can cook easily in the kitchen. Eventually, Christine took up the courage to take part in a cooking competition - the MasterChef. She emerged first eventually at the end of the season. Christines sense of perseverance was also present in her other aspects of life. She continue to study for a Masters degree and graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts two years ago. Christine also took up the position of Editor for a literature publication, published a cookbook last year, and started hosting a cooking show this year. Life for her seems to be as normal as anybody else. Reflection: Christines story reminds me of a commonly used expression: If you have a lemon, make lemonade. When you encounter obstacles, challenges or issues that turn your life upside down, you have a choice. You can choose to complain and feel bitter about the lemon in your hand, or you can choose to turn the lemon into something else, like lemonade that is sweet and soothing for yourself, or everyone. Nothing changes if you choose to be bitter about that lemon. However, there is always the possibility that circumstances can change for the better if you choose to make lemonade. You just do not know what you will get. Make a choice today whether you want to keep the lemons, or make the lemonade. Whatever you are facing in your life, be it in your family life, studies, relationships or work, it is possible to live positively if you decide to make lemonade out of lemons. theblindcook/
