Morning, a bit of a long update, but theres a lot going on! Its been a frosty start for many, but its the strong winds and rain that will grab the main weather headlines over the next few days. The wind is already picking up along the west and north coasts of Scotland, Ireland and N Ireland and heavy rain is arriving too. The deep area of low pressure is creating massive seas, with wave heights of 16-18m possible, combined with high tides, flooding for north and west facing coasts of Ireland, N Ireland, and Scotland in particular, is almost inevitable. Combine that with severe gales, maybe storm force for exposed coast of north and west Scotland through today driving heavy rain south east over the UK and Ireland and its going to be pretty rough. Following behind this band of rain the air is much colder, so showers will turn wintry with blizzard conditions over the Highlands. There will be a lull in the winds later today before they build again, becoming even stronger and more widespread, with gusts of up to 80mph possible, and severe gales from north Wales northwards. The Western Isles look like bearing the brunt of the worst winds and biggest seas, but it will be a very stormy night and last through Wednesday. Southern areas miss the worst of this round of bad weather, and by the time the rain arrives itll be quite blustery, but nowhere near the strength in northern areas. Showers follow behind through Wednesday and Thursday, becoming less frequent, and the winds will ease over northern areas. Then we have to watch to the south west where a potential secondary low is developing, this time bringing wind and rain to southern areas with gales along the Channel and possibly with snow on the northern edge as it heads east. But its too soon to judge the intensity and track just yet, so more on that later. Ian
