Morning doggie lovers, Memory and learning ability tend to decline with age, in both people and dogs. In fact, the types of brain changes, from normal aging to diseases like Alzheimer’s, are so similar between dogs and people that dogs are used as a model to study mental decline in human aging. So to keep your best friends brain healthy into old age, nutrition is key. Here are some great foods to include in your dogs diet to help their brain function optimally: Blueberries- these are rich in antioxidants and have been proven to imrpove memory and learning ability. There is also evidence to suggest they can reduce Alzheimers risk. These can be blended in with other fruits or veggies and added as part of their daly meal. Only a few are needed at a time for benefits. Salmon- (and other oil fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids)- benefits of fatty acids for your dogs brain include iomproved cognition and alertness, a reduction in the risk of degenerative mental disease (including dementia), improved memory, improved mood (less depression,anxiety, and hyperactivity). NB- Make sure you dont feed raw salmon. Seeds such as pumpkin, sunflower and flaxseeds (ground into a meal)- these are also high in beneficial fats, protein and vitamin E, along with other antioxidants and magnesium Eggs- preferably raw. These are rich in both omega fatty acids and Choline, an essential brain nutrient. Choline (strictly classed as an amino acid) can protect the brain throughout your dogs life, and reduce Alzheimers risk. Dark green leafy vegetables - contain high levels of iron and other minerals.A lack of iron has been linked to cognitive issues including poor memory. And dont forget coconut oil- known to help with keeping the brain and nervous system healthy Obviously a well balanced raw diet based on a variety of bones, meats, vegetables, fish, fruit etc, is the best way to keep your dog in overall tip top health.
