Morning everyone! UK Forecast – 21st May Synoptic - TopicsExpress

Morning everyone! UK Forecast – 21st May Synoptic situation: A large, broad area of low pressure is centred close to the northwest of Spain with a trough of low pressure extending northwards across the UK. An occluded front lies over north-western parts of Scotland and down towards Northern Ireland, whilst a warm front is just off the east coast of England. A new area of low pressure is developing over France and will move north into the UK tonight. Today’s outlook: Many parts of the UK are starting off dry with sunny spells this morning but over central and northern Scotland along with the Western and Northern Isles there is a lot of cloud around with outbreaks of rain, some of these on the heavy side. There is also more cloud across parts of East Anglia and southeast England with a few scattered showers now breaking out. Away from East Anglia and southeast England where there will be a risk of showers throughout the day, some of these potentially heavy and thundery, it will be a mostly dry day for much of England including the Isle of Wight, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands along with Wales with some good spells of sunshine developing. There is a risk of some sharp showers breaking out this afternoon, especially over central and southern areas and over the Channel Islands, but it is this evening when things take a turn for the worse as outbreaks of heavy and thundery rain move into the southeast. Across Northern Ireland it is a dry and bright start with sunny spells for many and whilst there will continue to be some sunshine today, a scattering of heavy showers will break out this afternoon, especially over central and western parts where hail and thunder is possible. Meanwhile the rain over central, northern and western Scotland will become increasingly confined to the Western and Northern Isles during the day with much of the rest of the country seeing sunny spells develop. Further heavy and perhaps thundery showers may break out during the afternoon, especially over the Highlands, but many parts will see a better afternoon. Winds will be light in many areas and rather variable in direction but turning north-easterly towards southeast England later and picking up a touch. Although fresher than the last few days, it will be another pleasant day for many with temperatures widely high teens, and in the best of the sunshine central parts of England could hit highs of 20°C or 21°C. However across the cloudier north and west of Scotland, including the Northern and Western Isles, maximums will be in the range of 9°C to 11°C. Some very wet weather will move up across England and Wales tonight – we will have more on this later this morning. Paul
