Morning folks! Lets talk stats, voter registration and the IEC. Yestersday, the commission released figures of the just ended supplementary registration and the number was some 10 000 lower than the 2nd run. In the May registration, IEC recorded 167,682, against 177,148 of the first supplementary registration. In the first and secheduled registration, 479,148 Batswana registered. The total figure of Batswana registered to vote in the October general elections is 823, 306, which is 68,6% of the IEC target of 1.2million. (Figures borrowed from prof Amy Poteete). * Now here is an interesting twist; In the past if you had failed to register you could walk into IEC headquarters anytime after and register in the continous registration process. I believe the IEC has announced that wont be the case, you missed the last three chances, you are doomed. Im wondering now, with around 40% of Botswana population registered to vote, and with likelihood (from experience) that only around 70% of the registered will cast their vote, what would therefore this mean? Are we likely to end with a government voted into office by some 30% or so? If it happens, and we face the might and wrath of a corrupt and oppressive sytem post October, I will say, serves us right. Our laziness, indeference attitude towards our Constitutional rights will get us what we deserve. Im not angry; just not amused!
