Morning garden series: the fall strangeness continues... Not only did over a dozen night blooming cereus flowers arrive in late October, but their closed blooms have stayed vibrant and colorful a week later! Normally, they bloom for one night in the summer and close at sunrise. Within hours the colors fade, the petals whither and harden, and soon they look like dried husks. This time of year- when its relatively cool and damp- they continue to hang on the plant and brighten up the garden- sort of an odd take on fall leaves. The hummingbirds are also quite active: two were perched under the dense branches of the pepper tree, conversing noisily. The male had a bright red throat patch- once he departed, the female went over and drank from her feeder. I really hope we get another nest in a few months. The butterfly bush has attracted 2 different nests and produced 8 chicks in recent years.
