Psychological egoists claim that even the most selfless act must on a fundamental level be carried out in accordance with a kind of pleasure principle i.e the maximising of pleasure and minimisation of pain. What do you think? Is Christmas Kitsch harmful? Is the kitsch we experience this time of the year harmless fun, or a kind of escapism from the less peachy reality of our lives? Would our culture be better off without such collective faux happiness or is the joy we experience real and valuable?
