Morning musings: Last night, late, when it cooled down, Doggy and I walked around the neighborhood. During our walk, we go past some rental units that look run-down, not maintained well, and maybe even a bit sad and scary—not someplace I would want to live (I’m not proud of that judgmental attitude, but there you have it). Last night, though, as we walked by, someone had left their back door open, probably to let in some cool air. I looked inside (of course), and saw a kitchen with a refrigerator covered, every inch of it covered with a child’s bright, cheerful drawings. As I walked a bit further, I saw the child, a young girl with dark braids, standing in front of the refrigerator/gallery holding her bright artwork and smiling broadly. I thought of the proud parent, lovingly hanging the artwork, and the child, basking in that love and pride, knowing her worth, her creativity, her place in the world and suddenly the rental units no longer looked sad and scary, but filled with light and love. I knew, instantly and completely, that child had something far more valuable than a beautiful home could give her … she had the certainty of being loved. And that’s whats needed the most.
