#MorningDevotion INFLUENCE Matthew 5:13-16 (NIV) You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. As Christians we are called to be the salt of the earth. That to me speaks loudly about influence. Unless we as Christians are influencing and affecting the world, then we have lost our saltiness. Think about this, you only put a pinch of salt in a plate of food and you can feel; the effects of the salt. In the same way, one small church should be able to transform a whole community. One individual just like you should be able to bring change at your place of work. Some thing else worth noting is that you put the salt in the food; you don’t put the food in the salt. Is it not amazing how we want the world to come to church instead of us going into the world and effecting change? Salt does not loose its saltiness when you put it in the food; instead the food acquires the taste of the salt. Look at the world and the church who is affecting who? Is the world tasting more and more like the church or is the church tasting more and more like the world? Who is influencing the way you live? Is it the word of God or is it the world? Why do you dress the way you dress? Why do you speak the way you speak? Why do you hang out at the places you hang out? Why do you keep the company you keep? Why do you listen to the kind of music you listen to? Why do you like a particular kind f food? It is not just something you came up with or decided to do; you were influenced by something or someone. The question is who influenced you and why? Back in the bible days there were three special qualities associated with salt. First, its whiteness was associated with purity. As Christians we are called to live pure lives. Matthew 5:8 says Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. We are to be an example of purity. Second, it was used as a preservative to keep food from going bad. In the same way, the Christians influence should protect against moral corruption. We can only do that if we ourselves are morally upright. Third, the most obvious quality of salt was that it gives flavor to bland foods -- the way Christians are to add spice to a spiritually bland world. We are not to allow the blandness of the world to make us loose our savor instead we are to add flavor to the world. With salt it’s not about the quantity it’s about the flavor. When a Christians salt has lost its savor, too often he tries to save the world with pepper. Are you worth your salt? PRACTICAL APPLICATION You are the salt of the earth, so how salty is the community you live in? Are you affecting them or are they affecting you?
