Morton colliery (Derbyshire) sunk in 1863 by the Clay Cross Co was closed in May 1965 after 102 years.Shaft depth was 313 yards (286m).It was referred to as No5/6 pit, DC position SK46SW, 441095, 360376 or 43/4160/355376, 424 ft (129.2m), No5 UC 43/4160/382384, 414 ft (126.2m) above sea level. The highest manpower was 1,033 in 1956 and highest output 390,472 tons in 1955.Situated at edge of the village of Morton, north of Stonebroom and due west of Tibshelf.Pit rows to house the miners were built at Stonebroom. Pithead baths were built in 1936. Seams worked: Deep Hard -1945, Tupton 5ft 5in (1.65m) -1948 and again -1960 Threequarters – Nov 1955 and –1965 and Blackshale 1945-1965. A Loebbehobel plough was installed in the Threequarter seam in 1958, however the results were bad because of bad geology. Water was a problem and the shafts were kept open as a pumping pit, to protect working collieries. 340,000,000 gallons pumped in 1990 at 647 gallons per minute. There was a connection through to Park House, where a demarcation point was abandoned in Dec 1960. A series of cascades for the water was constructed on the tip to aerate the water and help to remove the iron before discharging to the stream. Strathfield drift, Stretton pit (Tupton abandoned 1891) and Stretton Small mine drift were adjacent also. Pebley air shaft near Barlborough, (Derbyshire) was finally closed.
