Moscow: Claim of US Putin sanction absurd Russia says claims that the US might impose sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s personal fortune are “absurd”. British daily The Times of London, quoting unnamed sources, said in article on Friday that Washington was preparing a sanctions regime that would target Putins personal wealth. The newspaper claimed that Putin’s wealth stood at “$40 billion in Swiss bank accounts”. The Times said the sanctions against Putin could come into effect should Russian troops enter Ukraine’s soil. Reacting to the article, the Russian President press secretary Dmitry Peskov said “Thats obviously a hoax, an absurd one.” Peskov told Moscows Echo radio station that “Why be afraid of sanctions, especially when they are this absurd … In this case, one can only get a good laugh out of it.” The White House on Friday refused to comment on reports that Putins could be the target of US sanctions. “Im not going to get into foreshadowing particular individuals or entities that the United States may target,” national security adviser Susan Rice told reporters at the White House. “But let me just say weve been clear that there are additional individuals, officials, close associates of senior leadership, oligarchs and those entities that they are associated with that remain very much potential targets of additional sanctions.” Laura Lucas Magnuson, a spokeswoman for the US President’s National Security Council has also said that “As Russia continues to destabilize Ukraine, we are prepared to sanction additional individuals and entities, and we’ve made clear that we’d be prepared to target certain sectors of the Russian economy if we see a significant escalation including direct Russian military intervention in eastern Ukraine.” The US has already imposed sanctions against several Russian officials. It has threatened Moscow with more economic sanctions over the conflict in Ukraine if no progress is made on implementing a deal reached last week in Geneva between the US, Russia, Ukraine and the EU. Russia has slammed the sanctions as “inappropriate and counterproductive.”
