Most American workers in the private sector of the economy dont get paid when they or a close relative become sick. They cant stay home with a sick child, or spend time with a dying parent. Were the only developed nation in the world that doesnt require employers to pay sick leave. But 1.2 million workers in New York City just got paid sick leave for the first time, thanks largely to Mayor Bill de Blasio. Companies with five or more employees must provide up to five paid days off to workers if they, or their close relatives, fall ill. Theres huge popular support across the country for paid sick leave. Its time we made it available to everyone. Please join me, Democracy for America, and Social Security Works to ask the President to require by executive order that all federal contractors offer paid sick leave to their workers. He doesn’t need congressional approval. This is a first step that can build support for paid sick leave legislation covering all working Americans. When progressives organized to urge the President to require all federal contractors to increase their wages to at least $10.10 an hour, he did so.
