Most Canadians are unaware of the depth and the dangers of the Harper Governments increasingly involving our country in Eastern European politics (1) through his offering military aid to Ukraine outside of NATO. In signaling Monday that Canada “ … wants to create deeper defence ties with Ukraine, (by) signing a declaration that could lead to broader military co-operation in one of the most volatile parts of the globe.”(2) he increases the potential for warfare - that of offensive action by the Kiev Government. “The aid comes as Ukraine battles pro-Russian insurgents in its eastern region.”(3) These insurgents, the overwhelmingly Russian-speaking majority there, are only fighting for powers equal to that of the Quebecois in Canada: governance in their province’s affairs and in their language. Canada`s supporting action by which “Kiev Effectively Cedes East Ukraine to Separatists; Poroshenko Withdraws Hospital and School Funding” (4). Such action ensures that reintegration of the eastern region into Ukraine will only be achieved by armed force. That “The time for blowhard posturing is over. The time for hard economic calculation has begun.” is persuasively argued as what is necessary in the article “How can the West solve its Ukraine problem?” (5) bbc/news/world-europe-30278606 Canada has been playing the role of ‘powder monkey’ by supplying military resources to the Ukrainian President whose actions have been and are unpredictable. That role moves toward actions capable of not just intensification of Cold War Two but also the precipitation of World War Three. It`s time Canada`s Government assumes our traditional role of Peacemaker. That role will best serve the interests of world peace … and thereby best serve the interests of all Canadians, not only those of Ukrainian descent.
