Most Iowa counties, including Polk, have electronic filing of new cases and electronic filing of motions and other electronic documents on all civil cases. Electronic filing is a huge adjustment, but, once youve adjusted, it works pretty darn well. Today Im filing an appearance several counties away. It will be done in minutes. I have filed for a show cause hearing today, a continuance of a family law hearing and an appearance in a felony in an adjoining county, all without leaving my office. Court documents are more readily available to me, as well. In the new felony, I ran the trial information and minutes of testimony, plus the criminal complaint and jury instructions in 10 minutes. Of course, it can be hard to teach us old dogs new tricks, but electronic filing is going to be a boon for this lawyer and I hope for my clients as well.
