Most Western media outlets have used the word reformer in reference to King Abdullah Bin al-Saud of Saudi Arabia, who died earlier this week. The use of the word for a leader of a country where people are publicly beheaded, no form of dissent is tolerable, and women cant drive in the 21st century is not only wrong but also insulting to most Muslims who are, by extension, used as the context for such a description of the king to make sense. Most Muslims from other countries have always lived much freer lives. It is in fact the al-Saud family that has deviated from mainstream moderate Islam, introducing a form of life that has almost no equivalence in the 14-centuries-long history of the religion. It is far safer, I believe, to simply call him pro-Western.
