Most of my friends here in the Southwest look forward all year - TopicsExpress

Most of my friends here in the Southwest look forward all year long to the monsoon season, and the cooler temps and dramatic skies they can bring. We do not, generally, look forward to all the weeds that come after these monsoon storms. I have always found Roundup to be an effective, if not affordable, means of keeping this prodigious weed growth under control. Just lately all the holistic hippy pages out there are posting Healthy Alternatives to the product, making all manner of claims from its alleged responsibility for kidney problems, to the producers affiliations with Mansanto, as reasons to treat Roundup as if it were the devil. Not one to hold any opinion without my own experimentation or research, I decided to try one of these harmless recipes for weed killer. You will most often see mixes that use primarily salt and vinegar as active ingredients. So this is what I chose to work with. Using my old sprayer, and a gallon of vinegar, and about a quarter of a cup of salt, I sprayed a section of our yard, where we had unwanted weeds. In less than an hour the mix was clearly working. Let me warn you, however, this method is NOT without side-effects. I now have the most powerful craving for salt and vinegar potato chips.
