Most of our students come from townships. When you have never been - TopicsExpress

Most of our students come from townships. When you have never been in a township, it is hard to imagine how residents of townships or informal settlements live. Informal settlements, like Brazzaville, tend to lack access to basic social facilities such as clinics, libraries, schools and sporting facilities. Within townships, like part of Atteridgeville, most people live in small corrugated iron shacks measuring about 9ft x 9f (less than 3 by 3 meters). Most shacks do not have electricity or running water and the toilet is a bucket lavatory shared by 20 others. There are several difficulties that arise from living in these inadequate conditions such as flooding, cold, overcrowding, lack of security and risk of fire. On average in South Africa over the last five years there are ten shack fires a day with someone dying in a shack fire every other day! Residents suffer a lot of health problems, mainly stomach and respiratory ailments. In the 2014/2015 financial year GetOn Skills Development Centre aims to train a total of 744 students of whom 380 students in job-specific courses with 70% of them economically active or placed into internship programmes shortly after they finish the programme. We strive to give (young) South Africans a second chance at life by generating an income, so they can improve their lives and that of their families. Why not help assist GetOn to provide this much needed service in the community, by becoming a donor / funder of our programmes: getonskillsdevelopment.co.za/2704
