Most of the people, especially the so called intelligentsia/civil - TopicsExpress

Most of the people, especially the so called intelligentsia/civil society, the politicians, the judiciary and the media doubt the collective wisdom of “We the People of India” They say- “We the People of India” elect criminals, vote on the basis of caste and religion. Some of us vote out of fear or in consideration of the monitory benefits. (Money and muscle power) Most of the discussions are based on this misnomer and as such so many restrictions are proposed in the name of Electoral Reforms. Now let’s discuss these allegations one by one: We elect criminals- Do we? How can we elect a criminal? A criminal is not allowed to contest an election under the existing rules! So far as the case of persons charged with some criminal acts is concerned, the simple answer is: Even the law could not prove them guilty, why should voters be supposed to treat him as a criminal. If there is any fault in such matters, it is with the law and justice and as such we need ‘Judicial Reforms’ not ‘Electoral Reforms’ We vote on the basis of caste- Yes, some of us vote on the basis of our caste! What objection these people have about this? When we can have Job reservations on the basis of caste, reserve constituencies on this basis, why can’t we vote on this basis? We vote on the basis of religion- In general we don’t vote on the basis of religion, otherwise only there would have been one party rule in India! Yes, at times the political parties try to mislead us but there are already such provisions in the rules, which can be enforced strictly. We vote out of fear of muscle power- Believe us, we are not fools! Whenever such occasion arises we vote against such people but if the polling staff fails to maintain secrecy, only then we vote in favor of muscle man out of fear. As such it is the matter of free and fair election and the Election Commission must make enough arrangements to maintain the secrecy of polling. Nothing to do with Electoral Reforms! We vote for monetary considerations- The same argument, even if we take money from a candidate, it is not necessary that we vote for him/her. The only condition is that our ballot is secret! We do not elect good candidates- If we do not know a candidate, how can we vote for him or her? We have to choose among the candidates who reach us and tell about themselves, even if there is an honest selfless good candidate, but if we are not aware of it, how can we vote for him/her, he /she will have to lose his/her deposits. AS such please don’t doubt about the collective wisdom of “We the People of India” Please make such provisions that we are in a position to show our collective wisdom freely in a fair manner!
