Most of the people my age that I grew up in church with are no longer a part of an organized institution. You know why? Because they called the churchs bluff. They smelled what was being covered up. I dont believe the real Jesus was being communicated in those services, for the most part. The real Jesus doesnt require you to come to Him every week, inside the 4 walls to meet Him. He doesnt require a certain dress, certain songs, or certain confessions to make an appearance. The real Jesus doesnt scare easily and Hes not uncomfortable in your middle of the week, your after dark, or behind your closed doors. The real Jesus finds you, makes Himself at home in your humanity, and is comfortable in your trash can. He can handle your anger, your bad words, and your evil thoughts. He is not the fragile Jesus that Sunday School most often portrayed Him to be, and the children knew it. They may have conformed for a time, in their desire to be good little boys and girls, but at some point people began to call out what no one dared to speak of. Well, you know what? Jesus is pleased! I think He loves that people stood up to the false things being said about Him and His Father. What do I have to say to the kids I grew up in church with? You havent rejected Jesus in your absence, youve rejected the false image, and you got that straight from the Spirit of truth in you. You might not attend a weekly service to announce your undying devotion for Him, but your relationship with Him is alive and well and dont let anyone steal that from you. Hes not far from you but is as close to you as the air you breathe. Yes, you can find Him in the building, but Hes also hanging out in the most unacceptable of places, meeting with the outcast and the rejected, Hes drinking with the hurting and hes eating with the lonely. Dont worry about Jesus my friends, Hes being labeled right along with the rest of the ones we are scared for. You see, Jesus isnt in threat of extinction, Hes just so good at identifying with broken that weve not realized Hes very much involved and is manifesting Himself where Hes needed and wanted most. In the streets, with His people.
