Most of the roof of the church is missing, and the moon comes streaming through it, which gives the crypts the appearance, as they both approach, of being entombed in moonlight. Lilith lights a candle, and it casts her shadow on the walls, giving her the aspect of a dark, distended silhouette. Sarah falls behind. She calls out to Lilith, but she continues moving through the ruins as if oblivious to her presence. Then she calls to Sarah, softly. Sarah, come see. Sarah comes upon a large sarcophagus, which is partially couched in shadow. Lilith stands beside it, her face cast in the candle’s glare. As Sarah comes upon her, the candle melds their silhouettes, as if their shadows have become as one, as if their very essences have been entwined. Lilith gazes into Sarah’s face. 32
