Most of the time, the Latin binomial, (Genus/species), can be traced back to its original source and some type of understanding can be gleaned from either the Genus and/or species and of its relation to the subject being named. I also believe that this exercise in etomology is part of understanding Botany in general and that particular species...specifically. However, common names are not held to the same set of rules. Anyone can name anything...well, anything! I am going to give an example, then hope this Group can enlighten me....We have 2 species of Ruscaceae or Butchers Broom family here in Florida that were placed in the Genus Nolina...Nolina atopocarpa, Florida Beargrass and Nolina brittoniana, Brittons Beargrass. The former is listed as Threatened, the latter as Endangered and both endemic to our flora. I am going to post a photo taken by Craig Huegel...Take a look at that photo, summon all of the plant knowledge you proudly possess and tell me why it is called BEAR GRASS. Just askin...
