Most of us in the RTI movement have been concerned about the reported moves to amend the RTI Act by curtailing some of the provisions by: 1. Ordinance or 2. An Act of Parliament Apart from issuing statements, we need to undertake some visible action if we are to stop this. Pankti Jog of MAGP has come up with an interesting idea of holding a kind of referendum on this issue. Could we consider designing a common ballot paper and setting up ballot boxes in different parts of the Country? Different organisations could set up their ballot boxes and take the responsibility of reporting the votes FOR or AGAINST Amendments to the RTI Act. These could be put up in public places and also in large housing societies. I am aware that there are various views on this, but i believe presently we need to work together to save the RTI Act from dilution. If you would like to participate please send your endorsement. We could make a small team with Pankti to design a common ballot, and undertake this exercise together for maybe three days across the Nation say from 12 to 14 July. Indians abroad have also shown their concern on this matter. Maybe they could undertake this exercise on one of the days. All individuals/organisations which have participated would send their count of votes for and against any amendments to the Speaker of Lok Sabha, President, and leaders of all political parties before 18 July. I am hoping we will act together, and this could strengthen the RTI movement. Please circulate this to others who work for RTI
