Most of you have never heard me yell, or swear. I can assure you I know how. I was a sailor: the gold standard of blue language. We had a frustrating lab at school today, and our professor was out. One of the youngsters in glass noticed a flaw in the lab instructions left for us and announced “This is gay.” Fellow veteran Mike, 2LT, US Army, tried to explain to our young classmate – with more patience than I had at the moment – why such statements are inappropriate. I don’t think the youngster was buying it. Young people know everything, right? I sit in the front row, and soon the murmur of chit-chat behind me continued as we slogged through the lab. I hit a sticking point, and bellowed an obscene blasphemy I’ll not repeat here. Mike was probably the only other person in the room to have ever heard such colorful terminology before. There was a moment of stunned silence. Three heartbeats latter, someone behind me uttered an awestruck “Whoa.” Perhaps ears were bleeding? Then I heard the youngster start up. I suspected he was about to complain about being chastised while I was free to rip a string of profanity. I turned about, and told him loud enough for the others to hear “I don’t use the word “gay” when I find something stupid, weak, or lame. I say what I mean, and I use English well if not properly.” Thus ended the lesson.
