Most of you know I am a deal queen, so here is a word of advice (sorry its long, but you dont have to read it all!!) to moms and dads who have seniors in high school this year: Take advantage of the after school savings most stores have going on right now for your college-bound child next year. Your bank account will thank you next August. After the whirlwind of ACT fees, senior picture expenses, banquet fees, graduation party expenses and gifts to your childs friends and others who are graduating takes its toll this upcoming year, youll be glad to have a few things socked away. So here goes: Buy up those Twin XL sheets, comforters, mattress toppers and pillows; Buy a small fridge and store it (chances are your child can have a fridge, but if not, it will be easy to sell or use elsewhere). Dont buy a microwave unless it is too good a price not to since many dorms dont allow them or require you to rent from them (YSU does not allow them.) Stock up on notebooks, filler paper, pencils, pens and folders; Get a backpack with a laptop sleeve. A good backpack can be $100 but most are half price right now. Although out of the house, they still need these supplies so why not get them now? And at a clearance. There will be some great deals upcoming on electronics. While I wouldnt recommend buying a laptop now, check with your child about a TV or iPod dock or other electronic items they may need. Some students like Keurigs but they arent inexpensive, so look around for a great deal at the Holidays and pick one up along with stocking up on K-cups throughout the year. Take advantage and stock up early on things like laundry bags and shower caddies. Plus, consult with your child on the type of toiletries he or she wants. Pick up their shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste etc. and stock up. Cheap stuff you say? Hmmm, not when combined with the hundred other things they will need. I will say it right now. Huggable hangars are Gods gift to a young woman with an extensive wardrobe and a not so extensive dorm closet. Buy them now. The real ones are the best from QVC and they often have deals. The knock-offs are OK too and can be found at Target. If you shop at Giant Eagle, be sure to take advantage of the gift card-fuel perks extras they have periodically (.20 off a gallon for every $50 bought in gift cards as opposed to .10 and usually found close to the Holidays.) and stock up on gift cards that you can give to graduates. You may be invited to 15 or 20 graduation parties and gift cards are a great gift to give. In addition, consult with your child about the type of gift cards they may want to give if they are invited to a party themselves. Megan received Handels, Chipotle, iTunes and others from her friends who attended her party. Easy to stock up on throughout this year and keep in an envelope. Sorry for the length of this post. Perhaps a few of my newbie college freshman mom friends will agree here that you have no idea how expensive the little things are, until its too late. Plan now. Save money!
