Most people are familiar with the contributions of Indian civilization as being from the realm of the spiritual, as India has been called the empire of the spirit. The Indian fascination with all things spiritual & other wordly has brought about some unique and interesting and beneficial practices and exercises such as yoga, pranayama (breathing exercises) fasting practices and hygiene, yes even love making guides and systems such as Kama Sutra and Tantra, and the Ayurvedic practice of medicine. Hinduism boasts more books and commentaries than probably any other religious system on the planet, and India boast a greater variety of original and adapted religious communities and ideologies than anywhere. Indians came up with astronomy and astrology, intricately defined mathematics including the discovery of zero, a complex and ancient musical system and the study of sound long before the science of acoustics developed in the West in the later 20th century..the list goes on. It should come as no surprise then that intense spiritual practice, which entails discipline and dedication, would bring about a martial art that would be stunning in its performance and concept. Kalaripayattu is an amazing martial art form that some believe Buddhist Indian missionaries may have taken with them when they brought Buddhism to China and beyond. That might be an interesting subject for debate. Check out Kalaripayattu. Youll never think of peaceful, meditating yogis...or supposedly gentle and serene Indian women...the same way again :P
