Most people do not realize that the Gillooly name had varied spellings of our name 1. Gilhooly, 2. Gilhooley , 3. Gillhooly , 4. Gillhooley, 5. Gillooly , 6. Gillooley, 7. Gilooly. 8. Gilooley, 9. Gilluly, 10. Gilluley, 11. Gilhulley. 12. Gilhully, 13. Gilhuly, 14. Gilhuley, 15. McGilhooly, 16. McGilhooley, 17. McGillooly, Many families came from Ireland, to Scotland and some other family branches were all separated during immigration. Ireland, England, Scotland, Australia, Austria, New Zealand, India, Barbados, South Africa, France, Canada, and the United States. Many families had no idea their spellings to their names would be changed during immigration. That was mainly just because they did not know how to spell it. Immigration and customs spelled the names as they thought they sounded at the time. Many families were also separated from their parents, children, grandchildren, siblings, etc..... Never to be reunited again. Most have no clue they are even related. My great great grandfather was born a Gilhooly originally in Scotland. His father Michael was Gilhooley. When My (gg grandfather) came to America. He made a spelling change to Gillooly because his wife thought it sounded more American. They wanted to fit in during the mid to late 1800s. So, that is how I got my spelling.
