Most people dont care about Halal meat in their food or its production. What many people seem annoyed about is faith dictating what they buy on the High St and more importantly, a particular faith that they dont fully trust or understand appropriating itself into the daily lives of people in the UK via schools, fast food shops, restaurants etc. This isnt something only purported by the right, but bolstered by aetheism, secularists, free thinkers, traditionalists and all sorts of people who generally distrust religion on a large scale. There is definately a lot of hypocrisy at large in the debate and many media outlets are using it as a political angle to reinforce right wing ideas (or inturn to promote left wing notions of liberty and freedom), but I dont personally think in the long term it will be an issue. Just like other faiths have dietry requirements, so will Islam, which in a few years will be even more a part of the UK than people realise. Basically, its a tough one....:)
