Most people look at the Nissan Cube and all they see is an ugly - TopicsExpress

Most people look at the Nissan Cube and all they see is an ugly car. I admit, it is pig ugly but what I see when I look at one is, the ideal Australian taxi. Think about it for a moment, in the recent review of taxi services, one of the things they revealed was an intention to trial the London cabs out here, you know, the classic old black cab that is the opposite of stylish and racy. A taxi doesnt need to be stylish and racy, it needs to be spacious, economical and reliable but the London cabs they trialled at Ballarat Taxis, years ago, proved to be very unreliable. Par for the course with British cars. The reason they were looking at the London cabs was, with the end of the EA Falcons, as time doomed them to the scrap heap, there went the last 5-seater taxi. Including the driver, thats six seats altogether. The EAs served well as taxis, often clocking up to a million Ks before being retired and with some that was without having the head off the engine. The transmissions gave no trouble either but all good things come to an end, the BAs gave equally good service but they sat only four passengers. By this time all taxis were running on LPG to keep running costs down. Then along came the Camrys that ran more economically although they lacked the longevity of the Falcons. Their fuel economy was so good, it was worth having the engine rebuily around 400,000 Ks. There will be many with a make and model preference who would argue the point about longevity and reliability but I lived the life, I got my information at the coal face and I know what gave the best service. So then along came the Camry hybrids, using about 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres, outstripping all previous records but still the problem of the 4-passenger limit remained. Now we have another contender for the job that isnt a hybrid but it would run very economically on LPG, having a 1.5 litre engine. The Nissan Cube has maximum potential as a taxi in all the fields that taxi owners need, which are 1 space 2 economy and 3 reliability. Japanese cars are well-built and very reliable.
