Most people today have no appreciation for what computers have - TopicsExpress

Most people today have no appreciation for what computers have become over the last 50 years. The IBM 1401 was a landmark computer system due to the fact that it changed computing into the modern era. There were other landmarks to follow, but this one was the one that took computing from electro-mecahnical, to solid state. To give people an idea, the 1401 in 1959 leased for $2,500 a month (1959 dollars), a computer today that can be purchased for $2,500 (todays dollars), the comparison is unbelievable. It would take 500,000 1401s to match the computing power of a single 2,500 computer today. That is an extremely conservative estimate. The 1401 was the most successful computer of its era. It was an important computer because it mainstreamed business computing. It is hard to image today not having a computer in your home, image what it was like in the 1960s justifying having a computer in your business.
