Most physical therapists, unless they are very close to retirement, hold MSPT (Master of Science in Physical Therapy) or DPT (Doctorate of Physical Therapy) degrees. They have completed 3-4 years of undergraduate studies plus 2-3 years of post-graduate studies in order to attain these credentials. Beyond this entry level education, each therapist in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education related to our profession every two years; many therapists far exceed this minimum standard. A study** of various healthcare provider confirmed that, with the exception of orthopedic physicians, physical therapists come out on top of other physicians and health care professionals (including primary care physicians) with regard to knowledge of the musculoskeletal system. We are experts in the musculoskeletal system and we focus heavily on kinesiology, which is the biomechanics and movement of the body. Everything we do as professionals centers around movement…how to analyze it to identify problems and how to fix those problems!
