Most will have you believe the so called post workout anabolic window is around the 30 minute mark. I.e. If you dont have a protein shake within 30 minutes of finishing your workout, then you should prepare to say goodbye to your sweet sweet gains. Does the anabolic window exist? Yes - but its much more like 24-36 hours in most cases. For most of us that train regularly, we pretty much live in an anabolic state. Typically speaking, whatever & whenever we eat is going to be used to assist with muscle protein synthesis as our muscles live in a constant state of growth & repair due to our resistance training. There is absolutely no need to overcomplicate things & spend time worrying about this so called anabolic window - eat according to your goals, make sure to hit your daily macronutrient requirements, train like a beast & youll make all the gains you want provided you track & monitor your progress & tweak your nutrition & training accordingly. Alan Aragon made a great review about this post-exercise anabolic window if anyone is interested in a deeper explanation about this so called window of opportunity. Ill post the link below. Note - a protein shake is not required at any point in time. Protein powder is merely a convenience food & should be treated as such. Meeting daily protein requirements with whole foods is going to be just as beneficial.
