Mother: The Pastor When reflecting on what lessons and messages we hear from our pastors at church it’s interesting to see the similarities with the lessons we learn from our own mothers. At church we learn about faith, love, how to live in this modern world, forgiveness, prayer among many other things and these are all things Christian mothers teach their children from the time they are toddlers, years before they are old enough to understand for themselves the teachings from a pastor. In essence we can say aside from being a provider and a nurturer our mothers are pastors in their own right. Boys and girls learn different lessons related to them, how to grow up and how to live correctly from their mothers. In the same way Catholics go for confession with a priest, mothers serve as a confidant to their children, someone we can go to with our problems, thoughts, fears, joys and get honest advice back to help us get through whatever is it we may be facing. It is a wonder just how much strength mothers have. I believe God specially created an advanced “strength” button in women which automatically switches on the minute they become mothers and can never be switched off. When I look at my own mother and my sisters who are mothers I feel at a somewhat lower level than them because I doubt I would have the ability to keep standing with my head held high exuding a confidence and power with things that they have experienced throughout the years. Mother’s do not have a pause or time out button! They do not have the luxury of taking a few days away from life to recoup or rest, they have to keep going, keep looking after their families, keep teaching their children in the same way the pastor has to lead his congregation, leading them in the right direction, giving themselves individually to their member’s needs. For those like myself who have been blessed with mothers who have this type of impactful strength and lesson giving abilities I say take the time to praise God for this wonderful blessing and cherish, love and appreciate them forever. “Listen my son, to your fathers instruction and do not forsake your mothers teaching. They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck” Proverbs 1: 8-9 Laura Tsikirayi.
