Mother and Daddy were able to spend a year together in San Diego during 1943 and 1944 while he trained at Camp Pendleton with the Fifth Marine Division. She worked at Safeway Grocery and rented an apartment within walking distance. Camp Pendleton was in Oceanside California which was fifty miles away and he was able to visit her on weekends. One of his buddies had a car and Daddy paid him gas money to bring him to San Diego at the end of the week. His friend thought it was funny because when he let him out on the corner he never walked but ran up the sidewalk to see mother. They have quite the love story.
