Mother/daughter team Megan Powers and Diana Dahl will speak. Megan is a scientist, who holds a degree in biology from UC Santa Cruz and did graduate work in molecular biology, working on a Howard Hughes Institute scholarship in a biotech lab. She continued her work in genetics on soil micro-organisms working at NiFTAL - a charter project through UH-CTAHR. Megan has operated her own farm, was a part of the organic movement in the 90s, and currently is teaming with Diana to work their own subsistence farm. She is a co-founder of the tissue culture lab Aloha Medicinals Inc. that started in Haiku and now resides in Nevada with over 45 employees. Diana Dahl was a founder of Hawaii Organic Farmers Association (HOFA), the statewide administrator for its first six years and oversaw the development of the HOFA organic farm certification program. She has operated a small farm since 1988. During that time, she became familiar with many agricultural practices, those allowed, restricted, and prohibited in organic cultivation. As a grandmother, she has a particular interest in helping to inform Maui citizens on how certain agricultural chemicals affect all our health. In the speakers words - Our purpose is to help provide a balance to the flood of mailers and TV ads that have overwhelmed the public in the last two months.
