Mother tongue is most important for all . Language is a sensitive subject and we must work out a good policy. I see two cross currents of thoughts: A. We have over a dozen languages and we cannot run government \ commerce using all of them. Thus, must have one official \ national language. B. Mother language is the inherent right of each citizens. It is the duty of the government who gets vote and tax from all citizens to protect and promote all the languages. It is a matter of open debate. Let me put forth my opinion. 1. Let children study in primary classes in the mother language, and Nepali (Khasa bhasa) \ English on the side. 2. In SLC curriculum let there be Nepali, English and choice of one language from the list of the National Languages: Sanskrit, Pali, Gurung bhasa, Rai bhasa, Nepal bhasa, Maithili etc. Thus the students has to study 3 languages. The national languages must be defined as the indigenous to Nepal. The list of National languages should Not have Nepali, English, or Hindi. Because, Nepali is already covered as official language and English as the international language. Hindi directly competes with our indigenous languages like Maithili, Bhojpuri etc. Also it is well promoted by movies and media. 3. India practices 3 language formula: English, Hindi and a local language like Telugu, Bengali, Tamil etc. They have been practicing the policy for many decades. We can learn from them its positive \ negative sides. 4. Children are biologically programmed to learn any number as the first direct language. Only after puberty, it become difficult, Even older people can learn a language as the first language through so called submersion method. 5. Language means logic and vocabulary (concept). Children who speaks more than one always out competes against one language children. In USA many Asian children who speaks both mother language and English have been proven to out perform other students, even in sciences and mathematics. Thus, we need to impress upon the parents that it is not a drag but benefit for children to learn more languages. Thanks, Tilak Shrestha
