Mothers were ill prepared for the impact of diagnosis of Neonatal Hypernatraemic Dehydration (NHD). The women’s narratives of enduring distress were suffused with descriptions of self-blame and guilt. Memories emerged as a central pattern in the analysis indicating that, for these mothers, the diagnosis of NHD was a significant event associated with feelings of horror, self-blame and long-term emotional sequelae.
